The Difference Between 10k and 14k Gold ✨

The Difference Between 10k and 14k Gold ✨

Our latest launch is our boldest one yet! Modern yet classic, our new Locket Collection is truly a beautiful way to keep your loved ones close. And just like our beloved Reflection Coin Pendant, it is also available in 10k gold or 14k gold (along with gold vermeil and sterling silver).

Available in oval or square shapes, you can learn more about our Lockets and ideas on what to include in them here, and more about the meaning behind our unique Reflection Coin Pendant here. But in this article, we want to discuss the difference between 10k gold and 14k gold since it may not be obvious (even to us at times!).

First, it is important to understand that pure gold by itself is actually extremely soft and isn’t used for jewelry. To improve durability, gold is mixed with other metals before it’s crafted into jewelry to make it wearable. The gold’s purity is measured using the karat system, which measures the ratio of pure gold to secondary metals used in the alloying process. The greater the amount of pure gold in a gold ring or other piece of jewelry, the higher the purity level. Pure gold is 24 karat, meaning that 24 out of 24 parts of the metal are gold. Therefore, 14K gold is 14 parts gold mixed with 10 parts other metals, and 10K gold is 10 parts pure gold mixed with 14 parts other metals. 14K and 10K gold each have their own advantages and disadvantages, ranging from durability and cost to purity and appearance.

One advantage of 10k is that it is more durable than 14k. Because it has a lower gold content it’s stronger, and less likely to scratch, scuff or bend. A second advantage is the price - it's less expensive than 14k because it has less gold. However, one thing to note with 10k is that the color can be less vibrant yellow than 14k gold. Also, if you have very sensitive skin, there’s a slightly higher chance you might have a reaction to the other metals that are mixed in with 10k gold - however this is rare.

14K gold is the most popular gold for jewelry in the United States (and many other countries). It has a beautiful rich color, with the classic gold appearance that most customers look for, while still being durable.

We are excited to offer 10k gold in our Reflection Coin Pendant because we think it is stunning and love being able to offer this very special piece at a more attractive price point. We hope you agree! If you have any questions please feel free to reach out at info@tinytags.com
